“Evidence” and True Happiness

by Daikō Iizuka, Head Priest

Hello everyone. I hope you are well. The seasons are quietly changing again.
We live in an age where being “scientific” is highly valued. When we can explain something with data, reproduce the same results, and draw on expert knowledge, we consider it reliable—what we now often call “evidence.” And that kind of clear, objective proof is indeed important.
But there’s another question worth asking: “Are you truly happy?”
“Is your happiness something that rises naturally from within, or is it something you show to others?”

Buddhism teaches that true happiness is found in moments when we connect deeply with the life within us.
For example—
When you quietly place your hands together in the soft morning light.
When the breeze gently brushes your skin and birdsong fills the air.
When you savor a warm cup of tea with your whole heart.
When you lose yourself in reading a book.

In these moments, there is no data, no charts to explain what you feel. Yet there is something undeniably real:
a calm, quiet happiness that can only be described as
“I am alive—right now.”
It’s a happiness that doesn’t come from anyone else’s approval, but from deep within yourself.

Science seeks to understand the laws and systems of the outer world.
Buddhism seeks to discover where happiness lives within.
Both are sincere paths, each helping us live more fully and meaningfully.
So take a moment to live this present moment with care.
Listen gently to your own heart.
There you may find a peace that no one else can see—but one that only you can truly know.
I hope you can savor the beauty of this season.
